A sheet of self-adhesive kabuki tape masks for a model of the F-4 Phantom II in the C and D versions, in 1:48 scale. It is not a model but an accessory for the build. New Ware grades its sets into BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT. ADVANCED is the middle level, a middle ground in extent: more than the basic version, but with no ambition to cover absolutely everything. The exact list of contents is given by the manufacturer on the box.
ADVANCED makes sense at the point where the basic set is no longer enough for you but the top level is needlessly wide for what you intend. Typically this is a build where you want other awkward areas dealt with alongside the glazing, and at the same time do not need pieces you will not use. Weigh it up by what you plan for the model: a closed canopy and a model on a base will get by with less, while an open cockpit and an exposed landing gear call for a wider range. The differences between the levels vary from one set to another, so go by the manufacturer's data on the box, not by a general rule.
The Phantom in the C and D versions is a two-seat twin-engine jet meant for the air force, with a shorter nose and no built-in gun. The crew cockpit is long and divided into several separate parts, which makes it one of the most laborious places to paint. The dihedral outer wing panels and the anhedral horizontal tail are among the marks that identify the type at once.
Before you start applying them, lay the masks out according to where they belong and think through the order of the areas to be sprayed. On a multi-part canopy it pays to mask and spray all the parts at once so that the shade and the sheen match. Wash the clear parts beforehand and let them dry. Lay the paint on in thin coats; the first pass can safely be a dark shade that seals the edge of the mask. Lift the masks shortly after the paint has flashed off, back over themselves at an angle.
The package contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
