About product

B-17F Flying Fortress Basic masking set (New Ware, 1:48)

A set of self-adhesive masking templates cut from Japanese kabuki paper. It adapts well even to slightly curved surfaces, holds throughout the spraying and leaves no adhesive residue on the transparent parts once removed. The Basic designation is the basic grade of the New Ware range; for the same aircraft the manufacturer also makes a higher Expert grade, which is more comprehensive. The scope of the masks differs between the grades, so go by the contents of the particular package.

The real subject

The Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber of the US Army Air Forces from the period of the Second World War. It was powered by radial engines with turbochargers and had extensive glazing: the flight deck, the glazed nose for the navigator and the bombardier, side windows in the fuselage, gun turrets and observation ports. It is precisely the number of small frames that makes masking a B-17 one of the most laborious parts of the build, and ready-made templates shorten it markedly.

Usage tips

Degrease the clear parts before sticking the masks on and let them dry completely. Transfer the templates with tweezers and press them down with a stick or a toothpick, so that they seat even in the corners of the frames. Spray several thin coats, so that the paint does not seep under the edge of a mask. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, while the edge is brittle and peels away cleanly. Correct any paint that has crept under the edge with a fine brush.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the large bomber in 1:48 scale who want sharp frames without cutting tape by hand
  • Modelers who object to the laborious masking of many small windows
  • Anyone interested in a clean transition between frame and glass on a display model
  • Those who build a model for a competition and need a repeatably accurate result

The package contains masking templates only. The model, paints and glue are not part of it.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of masking templates that you use on a B-17F model in 1:48 scale during a build. You have to buy the model itself separately.

Basic is the basic grade of the set and Expert is the more comprehensive variant for the same aircraft. The exact scope of the masks in each grade is stated on the manufacturer's packaging.

Take them off shortly after the paint has dried, pulling back diagonally over themselves and preferably with tweezers. The longer a mask stays on the model, the greater the risk of tearing the edge of the spray away.

Yes, the offcuts of the sheet come in handy for masking camouflage boundaries or small details. The templates in the set, though, are cut exactly to the shape of the glazing of this type.
