The Orcs Catapult set from the maker Dark Alliance is a fantasy siege engine in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit of an aircraft or a vehicle and it is not a single figure either - it is an accessory for a fantasy collection that will serve as a pronounced element of a smaller diorama or as a piece for the gaming table. The parts are of plastic and are supplied unassembled and unpainted.
With figures, 1:72 scale is the most widespread size, so the catapult matches the other sets of the same line in size, and figures from other makers in the same scale as well. A siege engine is a rewarding subject: it has plenty of wooden surfaces, ropes and metal fittings on which painting techniques stand out, and in the composition of a scene it naturally forms the center of attention.
Separate the tiny parts with sprue cutters or a scalpel, never break them out, and level the parting lines with a file. Before painting, primer from a spray can or from an airbrush pays off - the smooth plastic of figures otherwise holds paint less well. Wood is well built up from a medium brown, highlighted with a dry brush, and the recesses emphasized with a dark wash. Metal fittings are managed with silver and a brown wash, which at the same time suggests rust and age.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and bases are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
