Even someone who takes no interest in plants knows the cattail: tall stems topped with a brown cylindrical spike growing out of shallow water at the edges of ponds and pools. In a scene it is one of the most effective elements there is: it says clearly that this is standing water and at the same time softens the transition between the surface and the bank, which tends to be the hardest thing to manage on a diorama. The accessory from the Model Scene brand is prepared for 1:45, 1:48 and 1:56 scale.
It belongs on the banks of ponds and pools, in flooded ditches, by backwaters and in wetlands, but also by muddy ruts and places where water collects. In nature it grows in dense clusters rather than singly, so it pays to plant it in groups and to reduce the density towar the edge of the growth.
If the plants come out of a water surface, fit them only once it has fully cured; in material that is still liquid the stems will sink or lean over. A drop of PVA or super glue is enough to fix them, and by a water surface a gel version is better so that it does not run. Lean the stems slightly, as natural growth is never perfectly upright and looks as if the wind has worked in it. Complete the transition at the foot with small vegetation or a muddy shade of terrain. The shade can be unified with a very light overspray from a distance; late summer means drier, lighter lower parts of the stems.
The accessory is supplied as scenic vegetation to be set into your own base. Glue, water surface material and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
