This is a decal set for the interior of a model of the F/A-18D in its late form, in 1:32 scale. It is not a kit nor a finished model, but an accessory to the Academy plastic kit: a colored print with a three-dimensional effect is applied to finished and painted parts. This set is the full version, and a smaller, so-called small version is made alongside it.
The F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engined multirole carrier aircraft. The D version is two-seat, with the seats one behind the other; the second position is usually equipped for operating the systems. Two cockpits mean a larger area where detail is visible, and in 1:32 scale that tells markedly on a finished model.
Preparing the surface is the key. Paint the part and brush a gloss varnish over it, which keeps air from staying under the decal. Release the decal after about fifteen seconds in lukewarm water, move it into place, align it and blot the excess water away with a soft cloth. Do not use a decal softener or a decal fixer, as their chemicals attack the printed resin and ruin the element. Once dry, unify the surface with a varnish in the degree of gloss you have chosen.
The set replaces the flat parts of the kit: instead of detail that is merely suggested in the plastic, a colored surface with an impression of depth appears and painting the smallest areas is no longer needed. Degrease the plastic before applying and sand down the coarser relief, so that the decal seats without bubbles.
The set is an accessory to a kit, not a standalone model. Paints, glue and varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
