About product

Mark I 1:144 RAF roundels Type A, A1 and B — a decal sheet

A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:144 scale with British roundels from the period of the Second World War. According to the name it holds three types, A, A1 and B, and that in two sets. It is an accessory to a model that is already built and painted, not a kit.

How the types differ

British roundels are not one symbol but a family of variants that differ in the number and the colors of the concentric rings. Type A has a red center, a white ring and a blue outer circle. Type A1 adds a yellow outer ring to Type A, which makes the insignia optically larger and sets it apart on a dark surface. Type B is the simplified version without white, just a red center and a blue circle, and was used where the marking was to be subdued, typically on the upper surfaces of the wings. That difference matters on a model: the same aircraft often carries one type of roundel on the upper wing, another on the underside and another on the fuselage. A sheet with three types therefore covers a whole machine without mixing sources.

Application tips

With concentric rings the main enemies are inexact centering and a silvery haze, because every discrepancy is visible at once on a circular shape. So polish the surface and spray it with a gloss varnish. Cut the decal out close to the edge of the printing, soak it in warm water and slide it onto the model over a thin layer of water, so that it can still be turned and moved. Relate the position to the panel lines or to the leading edge, not to the outline of the wing. Press the excess water out with a cotton bud from the center. On roundels over engraving and riveting use a softener and let the decal dry without interference. Finally even the surface out with a matte varnish.

Who the sheet is for

  • Builders of British aircraft of the Second World War in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers who need several types of roundel on one machine at once
  • Owners of older kits with yellowed decals
  • Those building a series of models who will use the two sets on the sheet

This is a decal sheet, not a kit. The model, paints and modeling chemicals are not included in the package.

FAQ

Type A is made up of a red center, a white ring and a blue outer circle. Type A1 has a yellow outer ring in addition, so at the same inner diameter it is larger overall.

It is the subdued variant without white, used particularly on the upper surfaces of the wings, where the contrast against the camouflage was to be as low as possible.

The diameters of the roundels are given on the box of the sheet.

According to the name it holds two sets, so it should do for two machines. The number of individual roundels is given on the box of the sheet.
