What the sheet contains

The national insignia of the Republic of China Air Force in Taiwan, that is a blue circular field with a white sun. The name gives seven diameters of the real thing, from 500 to 1200 millimeters, which in 1:144 scale corresponds to insignia roughly 3.5 to 8.3 millimeters across. Each size is on the sheet in two sets, so it will do for both sides of the fuselage as well as for the wings.

What it is good for

The small 1:144 scale tempts one to paint the insignia, but a circle a few millimeters across has to be perfectly regular, otherwise the eye notices at once. A sheet with graded sizes also covers machines of different sizes, from fighters to transport and training types, and suits correcting markings that are missing or botched in a kit.

How the decals are applied

Before you soak the sheet, check in the instructions whether it is not a self-adhesive version: a soaked self-adhesive film is ruined beyond recovery, whereas a waterslide decal that has not been soaked can be soaked later. On the usual waterslide version, proceed as follows:

• bring the surface to a gloss, as on matte paint a white haze forms around the decal
• soak the cut-out decal in clean water for only a few seconds
• let the decal stand on the paper until it starts to move freely
• settle it and press the water out from under it with a soft cloth from the center toward the edge
• once dry, go over it with varnish so that the edge of the carrier film disappears
