A sheet of wet decals in 1:144 scale with US national insignia in the rendering carried by the aircraft deployed at the landings in North Africa in November 1942. It is a short-lived variant of the markings that ordinary American sheets do not cover — which is why Mark I issues it separately. The particular dimensions and quantities are stated on the box.
Aircraft of several Allied states came together in the area in a short space of time, machines that did not know one another by sight, and telling them apart in the air was a practical problem. US national insignia therefore received an additional yellow surround around the star in its circular field, so that they could be read unambiguously from a greater distance. The markings were used for a limited time only, so on a model they date a particular machine unambiguously — and that is exactly why modelers reach for them.
The decals are applied by the wet method. The surface beneath has to be smooth and glossy — on matte paint a visible silvery veil will stay under the film. Cut the insignia out as closely as possible, dip it in lukewarm water for a few seconds, let it rest until the film releases and slide it onto the moistened place. Adjust the position with a brush, draw the excess water off with a cloth and use a softener so that the decal draws down onto the rivets and engraved lines. Once dry, go over the surface with a matte or semi-matte varnish, which hides the edges of the film. In 1:144 scale the insignia are very small, so work with smooth-jawed tweezers and preferably one piece at a time.
