Injection-molded plastic kit in 1:32 scale from Trumpeter. The set has more than 370 parts spread over sixteen sprues plus separate upper and lower fuselage sections, and it contains a photo-etched fret and rubber tires with tread. The manufacturer emphasizes an elaborate cockpit, the landing gear bays and a detailed engine. Also included is a weapons set, among other things JDAM guided bombs (GBU-31), GBU-12 and AIM-9X and AIM-120 missiles. The finished model is large: about 49 cm long, with a span of roughly 33 cm. The version modeled is the A, that is the land-based variant with conventional take-off and landing, unlike the B with its short take-off and vertical landing and the carrier-based C.
The F-35A Lightning II is a single-engine, single-seat multirole fifth-generation fighter. Its essence is a reduced radar signature (stealth), and that is precisely why it carries its main armament internally, in weapon bays in the fuselage. Weapons hung externally on underwing pylons increase the radar signature substantially; they are therefore used only where stealth is no longer needed and where the largest possible payload is wanted instead. Unlike the other variants, the A version has a gun built into the airframe. The aircraft combines strike, reconnaissance and fighter tasks and is in service with a number of countries.
Finish the cockpit and the landing gear bays before you close the fuselage. On a stealth aircraft the surface is decisive: sand the seams perfectly smooth and rescribe the panel lines, otherwise they will show after painting. Use primer and an airbrush. The typical gray low-visibility finish has subtle differences of shade between panels, so build the modulation up in fine steps rather than in strong contrasts, then unify the whole model with a matte coat. Under the decals use a gloss coat compatible with your paint, otherwise silvering will appear. Paint the weapons separately and fit them last.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
