The second part of a series of clear canopies formed under vacuum, 1:72 scale, for the Kawasaki Ki-60, Ki-61 II Hien and Ki-100.
Responsibility details are not available.
Whereas the first part belonged to radial engines, here the line is one that stood apart in Japanese production. The Ki-60 was an experimental fighter with a liquid-cooled V engine which never reached series production, but it laid the foundation for its successor. The Ki-61 Hien became the only Japanese production fighter with a V engine, and the Allies at first took it for a German type built under license. The II version had an increased area and a more powerful engine.
The Ki-100 is then the most interesting of the three: when production of V engines collapsed, dozens of airframes were left in the yard without engines. A radial engine was fitted into them, and the result was a machine that contemporary assessments rated better than the original. That is exactly why canopies with different framing came together in this set of three.
An extruded clear part has a fraction of the thickness of an injection-molded component, so on small canopies the hood stops looking like a block of glass. The letter abbreviation after the last type points to a particular kit, and the shapes match its outline.
It pays to match each shape to the right machine first and only then pick up the knife. The framing differs only slightly between the three types, and a mix-up only shows at the moment the part is separated and offered up to a finished fuselage.
The outline is scored with a point and broken away, and the edge is evened out by sanding on a flat surface. Use PVA glue for clear components; the surface will take neither solvent cement nor super glue. And count on the airframe of the aircraft being a matter for the kit itself.
