Bf 109G-6 1:72 - a one-sided masking set

A set of pre-cut painting masks for building a model of the Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 in 1:72 scale. It is neither a kit nor a set of parts - it is an aid that comes in at the moment of painting. The masks have a ready-made shape matching the parts of the model, so they are simply peeled off the backing and stuck on. Cutting strips of tape by hand for tiny frames is thereby done away with, and with it the risk of the scalpel slipping across the glazing.

The one-sided version is prepared for masking from the outer side of a part. Anyone who wants the frames visible from the inner side of the glazing as well will reach for the double-sided variant, which the brand lists as a separate item. The Bf 109G-6 is the most widespread sub-version of the G series. It was powered by the Daimler-Benz DB 605 inverted V12, and its recognition features are the pronounced fairings over the breeches of the fuselage machine guns. It was built in large numbers and with a multitude of equipment variants, which makes it one of the most frequently modeled subjects of all.

The masking procedure

Wash the transparent parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry, so that a mask will hold. Carry a mask over with tweezers, seat it along the frame and press the edges down with a toothpick. Apply the paint in thin layers; a thick coat leaves a ridge at the edge, which tears when the masks are removed. Take a mask off soon after the paint has flashed off, slowly and at a shallow angle.
