About product

Border Model 1:35 IJA Tiger I with a resin commander figure

A kit of the Tiger I heavy tank in 1:35 scale from Border Model. According to the name, the package also includes a resin figure of the tank commander, which is a usual addition in this brand's newer kits — resin holds sharper detail of the face and the folds of clothing than injection-molded plastic. The abbreviation IJA in the name refers to the Japanese army order to which the form of the model relates.

The real subject

The Tiger I was a German heavy tank of the Second World War with a main armament of 88 mm caliber and a characteristic angular hull of flat armor plates. The Japanese side ordered and paid for one vehicle of this type in 1943, but it was never delivered to Japan — transport right across Eurasia or by sea was impracticable in the circumstances and the vehicle stayed in Europe. For the modeler it is therefore an interesting historical episode, not a vehicle that saw service with the Japanese.

Building and painting tips

  • Finish and paint the running gear and the inside of the hull before closing it up — on the Tiger the running gear is complex and you cannot get back to it.
  • Wash the mold release residue off the resin figure, cut off the casting blocks and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue.
  • Paint the figure separately from the vehicle and put it in place at the end, otherwise you will damage its face during handling.
  • Shading the base color suits the large flat surfaces of the hull, so that the model does not read as flat.
  • Build the weathering up in layers: a wash in the recesses, then a dry brush on the edges and finally pigments on the running gear.

Who the model is for

  • For builders of German vehicles looking for a less usual version.
  • For modelers who want a model with a figure in the turret.
  • For collectors who appreciate newer molds with fine surface detail.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It refers to the Japanese army, which ordered one vehicle of this type in 1943. The vehicle was not delivered to Japan, so the form of the model relates to that order.

According to the name the figure is resin. Wash the mold release agent off it before gluing and use cyanoacrylate glue; ordinary cement for plastic does not work on resin.

Check the contents of the package and the number of parts on the box and in the instructions.

The model matches an ordinary kit of a vehicle in 1:35, except that working with the resin figure calls for a little experience. For a complete beginner a model without resin is more suitable.
