U-STAR Pre-Cut Adhesive Sandpaper, 600 grit

Self-adhesive abrasive paper of 600 grit from U-STAR, supplied pre-cut. There is nothing to measure and cut: you peel a piece off the backing and stick it onto whichever tool you need, a sanding stick, a flat file, a wooden or plastic backing or a thin carrier of your own. That way you match the abrasive surface to the shape and the size of the spot you are sanding. It is modeling equipment, not a kit.

Use

• Stick it onto a backing as needed. A hard, flat backing keeps the surface flat; a thin or flexible carrier, by contrast, reaches into narrow gaps, between details and into places ordinary abrasives cannot get.
• 600 grit is medium to fine: it suits smoothing an already leveled surface, blending filler with plastic and preparing a surface for paint, but not heavy removal.
• The order of grits: a lower number means a coarser abrasive, a higher one a finer abrasive, and you work from coarser to finer. A fine grit will no longer smooth out the scratches left by a coarse one, it only polishes them, which is the most common beginner mistake. So level the surface with a coarser abrasive before you reach for 600.
• Sand wet where the joint and the surface allow: less dust, the abrasive clogs less and the result is smoother. Then let the tool and the paper dry.
• Once the surface clogs or wears out, peel the stuck-on layer away and replace it with a new one.

For modelers who are not served by ready-made sanding sticks with a fixed shape and want to tailor the tool to a particular spot on the model: curved surfaces, narrow gaps, inside corners or small details. It will also suit anyone who makes their own sanding tools and needs an abrasive that sticks on quickly and cleanly.
