About product

Aging Enamel Powder Pink — a U-STAR powder pigment

Aging Enamel Powder Pink is a loose modeling pigment from the U-STAR brand made for weathering and surface effects on finished models. The shade is in the name: Pink, that is, a pink tone. Pink and flesh tones appear in pigment ranges mainly for the sake of figures and for finely adjusting the shade of other powders. A pigment is not a coating paint: it does not create a continuous film but settles on a surface as a fine powder and changes its look both in shade and in texture. That is exactly why it comes into play only at the very end of a build, when the model is painted and the decals are in place.

How to work with the pigment

The most ordinary method is applying it dry. The powder is taken up on a flat or an older brush, carried to the model and rubbed into the places where the effect is to appear; the excess is taken off with a clean dry brush. The result can be tuned gradually this way, from a faint hint to a saturated layer, and any slip can still be wiped off before it is fixed. The second option is to mix the powder into a thin slurry and let it run into recesses, corners and around rivets, where it stays settled once it has dried.

  • Work in layers and keep checking the model in daylight.
  • A pigment holds considerably better on a matte surface than on a smooth gloss.
  • A smaller dose and more repetitions give a more natural result than one heavy layer.
  • Set brushes aside for pigments alone, as the powder washes out of the bristles badly.

Who the pigment is for

  • For modelers finishing vehicles, aircraft, ships or figures who want to give a surface depth.
  • For builders of dioramas, where weathering brings a model into keeping with its base.
  • For beginners who want to try weathering on a material that is easy to wipe off and put right.

Do not inhale the fine powder, work in a well-ventilated room and wash your hands after work. Check the volume of the package and the composition on the box.

FAQ

It is not. It is a loose pigment, that is, a fine powder with no binder. It is not applied as a coat but rubbed with a brush onto an already painted surface, where it forms a thin matte layer that changes the shade and the texture. It will not replace the base coat of a model.

A dry pigment holds on a surface mechanically, so it will last on a model in a display case, but it will not resist rubbing. Modelers therefore usually fix it with a matte clear coat or a fixative, but count on the fixing slightly muting the effect. No particular fixing product is given for this item; follow ordinary practice and always try the method on a piece of spare plastic first.

Check the volume or the weight of the package on the box. With pigments it generally holds that they are used up very slowly, because a genuinely small amount is enough for one model.

Yes, the powders can be mixed with one another and modelers do it routinely to mix a transitional tone. Mix a little more than you estimate, as exactly the same ratio is hard to hit a second time.
