TERRAFORM Volcanic Rock Mix, scatter in a mix of grades

A loose scatter material from the TERRAFORM range by the Spanish brand AMMO of Mig Jimenez. It is not a model and not a finished scenic object, but a material that you pour onto a diorama, a display base or a wargaming base and fix in place yourself. The Volcanic Rock version is aimed at volcanic terrain: fields of clinker, the cracked crust of cooled lava and slopes covered in fragmented material.

The designation Mix stands in the range where the other items give the coarseness, alongside the Thin, Medium and Thick grades. On volcanic terrain an uneven grain is an advantage: real clinker has fine dust and coarse pieces side by side, and it is exactly that contrast that makes the surface interesting.

Use

• Shape the terrain from a base material first and let it cure; the scatter is applied only to the finished shape.
• Spread the material in a thin layer and only then fix it, usually with thinned PVA glue and a drop of dish soap dripped with a pipette over a moistened surface.
• You can pick the coarser pieces out of the mix and place them deliberately in the foreground, then spread the finer part over the rest of the surface.
• Match the shade only after it has dried: washes bring out the hollows, dry brushing picks out the edges and gives the scene depth.
• Set the vegetation and the model itself in place at the very end.

Who the material is for

For builders of dioramas and display scenes in any scale, for wargamers who build their own bases and gaming terrain, including fantasy and science-fiction themes, and for railroad modelers. A mix of grades is a practical choice if you are building one scene and do not want three separate grain sizes.
