1:200 ANA Boeing 777-300, a Hasegawa Kit

This injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese brand Hasegawa in 1:200 scale represents the wide-body twin-engine airliner Boeing 777-300 in the form of the Japanese airline ANA. For models of airliners 1:200 is the established standard, because even large types stay a manageable size in a display case.

The real subject

The Boeing 777 is a wide-body long-haul airliner with a pair of large turbofan engines, which replaced the older three- and four-engine types on long-haul routes. The 777-300 version is the stretched variant with increased passenger capacity, recognizable above all by its markedly longer fuselage compared with the basic version. The type is marked out by a large wingspan, six-wheel main landing gear units and one of the largest engines ever used on an airliner. Japanese airlines are among its major operators, on long-haul and on densely booked domestic routes alike.

Building and painting tips

With airliners a smooth surface and a clean finish are what decide; the seams on the fuselage are filled and sanded very carefully, because every irregularity shows on a uniform area. White is the most demanding shade: it is sprayed in thin coats over a light primer, otherwise the base shows through. On models of airliners the windows and the stripes tend to be handled with decals, which cover a large area; before applying them a gloss varnish, plenty of softener and patience are necessary. Try the engine nacelles and their pylons dry, so that the angle is right. Fit the landing gear last, as the model is fairly heavy on it.
