A set of masks for a model, not a kit and not paint. On a civilian off-road vehicle the most demanding part of painting is precisely the glazing: the windshield, the side windows and the headlights have a large area, they are framed by a narrow lip of the body, and any paint crept onto them shows straight away. The masks solve that problem with shaped pieces that follow the outline of the surface exactly, so the edge comes out sharp and the same on both sides of the vehicle. On the forms used by the military the boundary between two shades of paint is run the same way.
The FJ43 is an off-road vehicle from the family of Japanese Land Cruisers, the lengthened variant of the shorter FJ40 form. It came about as a working and utility machine with a simple boxy body, rigid axles and a reduction gearbox. Thanks precisely to its toughness and the ease of repairing it, it spread far beyond the civilian sector; in modeling it appears mainly as a vehicle of armed forces and irregular units in the Middle East, often with equipment added. A model in 1:35 scale thus goes well with a diorama of modern infantry.
The masks are stuck onto a dried primer coat, before the actual shade is painted. The base has to be clean and degreased. Lift the piece off with pointed tweezers, seat it and press the edges down carefully with a toothpick; paint creeps under exactly where the edge has not seated. Spray at a right angle and in thin coats. Take the mask off while the paint is only tacky; on a cured coat the lip tears. Clear parts are more comfortable to mask while they are not yet glued into the body.
