Building a ship differs from an aircraft or a vehicle above all in how long and how delicately you work with small things: laying deck planks, cleaning up hull sides, cutting strip to length, working with rigging and with dozens of tiny fittings. Improvised implements from around the house will manage this work only for a while. A utility knife tears wood rather than cutting it, and pliers without fine jaws will crush a small part. Modeling tools, by contrast, have thinner and more precisely guided edges and jaws, so you lead the cut and the grip exactly where you need them.
Keep the tools sharp and clean. A blunt edge presses into the material instead of cutting and is the most common cause both of slipping and of a damaged part. Cut against a metal ruler and on a cutting mat, not on the table top. Take small parts off in two stages: roughly from the sprue first, then level the cut tight to the part. When the work is over, wipe the tools and store them so that the edges do not touch each other and do not corrode.
