A square file, Cut 2 from Excel has a right-angled section with four working faces. It suits enlarging square openings and leveling right-angled grooves.
Responsibility details are not available.
A file with a square section and a cut marked Cut 2, where a lower number means a coarser cut and a higher one a finer cut. The square profile has four flat working faces and sharp edges between them, so it can level a surface and at the same time hold a right angle in a corner.
Square openings and grooves
It is reached for most often when a square cutout has to be enlarged or trued up. Typically an opening for a photo-etched part, a groove for an accessory, a seat for a magnet or a recess that something is meant to sit down into. A square opening cannot be enlarged with a round file, because it rounds the corners off and the part then sits crookedly in it. The square profile, by contrast, keeps both the wall and the corner straight.
Check the fit as you go
With cutouts the rule is that material can be removed but not put back. Work little by little, therefore, and try the part in the opening dry at regular intervals. The ideal state is one where the part sits down under light pressure, not one where it drops freely into the opening, because such a joint then has to be filled with glue and the gap shows.
For modelers who work with photo-etch, with accessories set into plastic or with reworking of parts of their own, where a square opening has to be made or adjusted.
The file has sharp teeth and sharp edges, so protect your fingers. Do not inhale the dust and work in a ventilated room.
