Interlocking pavers 1:48, a rectangular apron

A printed base for a model with the subject of interlocking pavers in 1:48 scale, in a rectangular format. It is not a kit and not a diorama with figures and scenery, but a surface you stand a finished model on. Interlocking pavers are exactly the surface machines and vehicles actually stand on when they are not in use, so a model gains a context at once.

What the base deals with

A model standing on a bare board or on glass looks like an exhibit without any connection, and photographs of it tend to be flat. A paved surface gives it an area with texture and scale, so it is immediately clear how large the model is. Against building a diorama of your own it saves both work and space, and above all it is ready at once.

A rectangle or a circle

The same subject also exists in a round format. A rectangle fits a display case better and suits models that are markedly elongated in shape, while a circle suits a model standing on its own in the middle of a surface. Side by side, both versions can also be used as a continuing surface.

Use

• Back the base with a firm board, otherwise the corners will lift in time.
• The seams in the paving can be picked out with a fine pigment or with a dark wash drawn into the lines.
• First just stand the model on the surface and turn it around, and only then choose which edge will face the front.
• When photographing, put the light at a low angle, and the texture of the paving will then stand out.

For modelers who want to display or photograph a finished model on a faithful surface and do not want to build a whole diorama for it. It suits machinery, vehicles and aircraft models in 1:48 scale.
