The F-4G Phantom II is the two-seat version of the Phantom adapted for fighting the ground radars of air defenses. It was created by rebuilding F-4E machines: in place of the gun armament in the nose came equipment that locates a transmitting radar by its own signal, and the crew then attacks it with missiles homing on the source of the emissions. The crew consisted of a pilot and a systems operator, on whose work the whole task depended. Machines of this role flew under the nickname Wild Weasel and played a prominent part in the operations over Iraq in the early 1990s. Externally the F-4G differs from the other Phantoms mainly in the fairing on top of the fin and in the addition under the nose.
It is a set of photo-etched parts in 1:48 scale for an F-4G model. Photo-etch is thin sheet with detail at a thickness of tenths of a millimeter, which an injection-molded part cannot have. What exactly the set contains and which kit it is cut for is set by the manufacturer's part number and by the enclosed instructions.
Before you start, go through the instructions and compare the parts with the kit. Where photo-etch is to replace a detail from the box, first cut the original shape off with a sharp blade and sand the surface flat, otherwise the replacement will not seat and will stand above the surface. Cut through the tabs on a hard surface, not by breaking them. Run a bend along the marked groove in one stroke. The parts are not polystyrene and cement for plastic will not join them; allow for super glue in a tiny amount. Before painting, wash the sheet, degrease it and prime it.
A set of photo-etched parts is supplied. The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
