The second part of a decal series from the Mark I brand devoted to the national marking of British night fighter machines of the First World War. It is a sheet of waterslide decals, not a kit: the markings are applied to a finished, painted model. The first part of the series comes out separately.
The British national roundel of the First World War had the order blue, white, red. Machines deployed at night over the home country, however, needed marking that would not be needlessly conspicuous in the light of searchlights, and so the white was darkened, subdued or left out altogether. The resulting roundels are subdued and you can tell them from the daytime standard at first glance. For a modeler this is exactly the kind of detail that turns a standard kit into a particular machine with a story of its own, and one you usually do not get from the decals in the box.
Go over the surface with gloss varnish, so that it is smooth and no air gets caught under the film. Cut the decal out together with the backing, dip it briefly in lukewarm water and let it rest until it starts to slide freely. Slide it onto the model with a moistened brush, press the excess water out with a soft cloth from the center toward the edges and then apply a decal softener. On First World War aircraft a decal softener is particularly useful: the covering of the wings is ribbed, and without it the marking would stay stuck across the hollows like a flat sticker. Once it has dried perfectly, unify the surface with matte varnish.
