About product

Sd.Kfz. 138/2 Hetzer, early version, 1:35 from the Dragon company

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Jagdpanzer 38 light tank destroyer in 1:35 scale. The vehicle is rendered in its early production form, that is with the arrangement of details carried by pieces from the start of series production. Dragon is known for fine mold seams on its parts and for richly broken-up superstructure detail, so it is a kit rather for a modeler who already has several vehicles behind him.

The real subject

The Jagdpanzer 38, commonly called Hetzer, was a light tank destroyer built on a chassis derived from the Pz.Kpfw. 38(t) tank. Series production ran from 1944 at the BMM factory in Prague and subsequently at the Skoda works as well. The gun armament was a 7.5 cm PaK 39 with a barrel length of 48 calibers, mounted in a ball mantlet in the right-hand part of the front wall of the fighting compartment. The design rested on a low silhouette and markedly sloped armor plates; the crew was four men and the space inside was very cramped. Early vehicles differ from the later ones in details of the exhaust system, the mounting of the fenders, the shape of the gun mantlet and the arrangement of the vision ports.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the running gear and the interior details of the fighting compartment before you close up the hull, because once it is glued you will not reach them. Use thin cement for plastic, which wicks into the seams, and apply a filling primer before painting to even out the surface. The tracks and the underside of the hull deserve a dark wash and dry pigments, which give the vehicle a dusty or muddy character. A multicolor finish is typical for late German vehicles, so an airbrush at low pressure and masking with modeling compound or thin tape come in useful.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers who collect German armor of the end of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • Those interested in vehicles built in the Protectorate and in equipment derived from the Pz.Kpfw. 38(t) chassis
  • Builders who want a particular early production version rather than a generic Hetzer
  • More advanced modelers who get on with fine part breakdown and work with weathering

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the German ordnance number assigned precisely to the Jagdpanzer 38 tank destroyer, that is to the vehicle known as the Hetzer. It is not a different type, only the official ordnance designation of the real subject.

Early and later pieces differ in details of the exhaust, the mounting of the fenders, the rendering of the gun mantlet and the vision ports. The exact extent of the differences in a particular kit is described in the enclosed instructions.

Rather not. The part breakdown is fine and the vehicle has a lot of small pieces, so it suits a modeler who has already built some armor in 1:35 scale.

It is not. It is supplied as an unassembled and unpainted plastic kit; paints and glue are not included.
