Landing gear bay masks for the Mitsubishi A7M1 and A7M2 Reppu in 1:48 scale close a finished bay off for the time the airframe is being sprayed.
Responsibility details are not available.
Pre-cut masks that close off the openings of the landing gear bays in the lower surface of the wing. The set covers both designations given in the name, that is both stages of development of the Reppu type.
Working in the depth of the part
A bay is one of the least accessible places on a whole model. It lies under the wing, it is narrow and full of details you do not want to touch. The mask is therefore laid onto a finished bay from above, pressed down around the perimeter of the opening and not handled any further. Use tweezers and a blunt toothpick; you cannot reach inside with a finger without leaving grease in fresh paint.
When to mask and when to unmask
The mask comes up at the moment the inside of the bay is sprayed, weathered and dried through, and it leaves before the gloss varnish under the decals is applied. If you leave it under the varnish, a step builds up around it. After lifting it, check the edge against the light; any overspray can be removed with a stick and a little thinner, while the varnish has not yet sealed the surface.
The Reppu was created as the successor to the A6M carrier fighter. The A7M1 flew with the Nakajima Homare engine and the A7M2 received a more powerful Mitsubishi powerplant; by the end of the war the type remained at the stage of prototypes and a small series.
