An injection-molded plastic kit of one of the best-known fighter biplanes of the First World War, and in the unusually large 1:24 scale. The large format is an advantage on aircraft with fabric covering and extensive bracing: the wing ribs, the engine cowlings, the exhausts, the cockpit and the attachment of the struts all stand out, and the model will take improvements of your own, such as a detailed cockpit or bracing wires from fine thread. It is a striking display piece that differs from the usual builds in 1:48 and 1:72 in the sheer weight of its presence.
The SPAD S.XIII was a French fighter biplane with a water-cooled Hispano-Suiza V engine, notable for its sturdy structure, good climb performance and high diving speed. It was used by a number of Allied air services and was one of the most widely used fighter types of the closing period of the war. Its characteristic features are the squared-off nose with the radiator, the pair of synchronized machine guns ahead of the cockpit and a relatively clean biplane wing cellule.
The order of work is the key: finish and paint the cockpit, the engine and the frame before the fuselage is closed. Dry-fit the struts with both wings in place and glue them only once the geometry sits — in 1:24 every asymmetrical angle is visible at first glance. Do the bracing wires after spraying and clear-coating, ideally from elastic thread that can be tensioned and will not stretch over time. A propeller with wood grain is created with glazes of brown shades over a light base. The fabric surfaces come to life with gentle modulation over the ribs and a restrained wash, while the metal engine cowlings take a glossier surface and fine wear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
