The Mk.IX version was created as a quick answer to the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190, which rolled over the Spitfire Mk.Vs of the day above the Channel in the spring of 1942. The solution was to take the airframe of the fifth version and put a two-stage supercharged Merlin with an intercooler into it. The letter c after the designation means the universal wing, into which a pair of 20 mm cannons supplemented by machine guns could be fitted. The Mk.IX was built in enormous numbers and became the most widespread variant of the whole type.
At a reduction of 1:24 the cockpit is so large that the instrument panel stops being a detail and becomes a display surface. That is exactly why a decal makes sense that carries colored dials, labels and the color of the panel itself, and on top of that raised bezels for the instruments and their glazing. The result comes close to what would otherwise be achieved by combining photo-etch, printed film and a drop of clear varnish in every instrument.
The sheet is prepared for the shape of the panel of the large Spitfire kit from the British maker, so there is no arguing with the size and the placing of the openings. The recommended procedure is to apply the decal to a smoothly sprayed surface, settle it into all the recesses with a brush and only then finish the surrounding cockpit. Anyone who wants a perfect result can put a drop of clear varnish into the individual dials once dry and so gain glass with a convex meniscus.
The Mk.IX was also built in a photo-reconnaissance version and a number of its machines served on with foreign air forces into the postwar years. For a builder that means a wide choice of liveries, from the gray and green camouflage schemes over the Channel to desert shades over the Mediterranean. The equipment of the cockpit stays practically the same across them, so the sheet is usable whichever machine you choose.
