This is not a model and not a kit, but an add-on set. It replaces the idler wheels, that is, the rear guide wheels of the track, supplied in the basic box. The idler wheel is always clearly visible in photographs of the vehicle, and its shape and surface are among the details that decide the credibility of a finished model. This version corresponds to type 1 used on late StuG III Ausf. G machines and is prepared for the StuG III G kit by Rye Field Model. Sets with another type of wheel or for a kit of another brand are made by the manufacturer separately, so watch both when choosing.
The StuG III was a German assault gun built on the chassis of the Panzer III tank. Originally it was to accompany the infantry, but as the war went on it was used more and more as a tank destroyer and became one of the most numerously produced German tracked vehicles of the Second World War. The Ausf. G version is the last and the most widespread production variant. During production it went through a number of modifications, among them precisely in the form of the running gear, so the late machines differ noticeably in detail from the early ones.
First try the wheels dry, so that the spacing and the axle fit. Before gluing and painting, wash them in warm soapy water. Finish and paint the running gear and the tracks before the side skirts and the tools cover them; afterwards you will have trouble getting at them. Dust and mud collect on an idler wheel most of all at the rim and between the spokes, and that is exactly where it pays to lay the pigments on more heavily. Keep the wheels able to turn for as long as possible; that makes fitting the track easier.
