It replaces the parts from the box with castings with more crisply rendered teeth and a more cleanly made sprocket body. The manufacturer prepared this version for the M1 Abrams model by Meng and designates it as Set A, that is one of the distinguished forms in its range; it carries the same version separately for models by further makers too, so watch which model you are buying the version for.
The M1 Abrams has its drive sprockets at the rear, where they pass the power from the transmission to the tracks. It is precisely the teeth of a drive sprocket that tend to be the most demanding place on plastic models, because the mold has to draw them out of a complex shape and the drawing therefore softens easily. On a finished model the drive sprocket is clearly visible between the upper and lower runs of the track, and during the build it decides how accurately the track seats. A crisp casting therefore tells not only visually but also in how the track goes onto the model. The manufacturer uses the designation active version for the form of the parts on vehicles in current service.
Wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks away with a fine saw and level the mating surface with sandpaper; protect your airways when sanding. Fit the sprocket with cyanoacrylate glue only once the running gear has cured, and before gluing try dry how the track seats on the teeth. Painting is most comfortable off the model: a primer, the body shade of the vehicle, then dark accenting between the teeth. Suggest the metallic sheen on the edges of the teeth with a graphite pencil or silver pigment only at the end, once the dust and mud weathering is finished.
