An accessory set for a model of the German Panther medium tank in 1:35 scale. According to the name it is one piece of an idler wheel of 665 mm diameter in the ribbed back form, and in a disassembled state. The set is cut for the kit by Takom. The target kit is given deliberately, because T-Rex Studio offers Panther idler wheels in several sizes and forms and without it the versions would get confused.
The disassembled form suits where the wheel is not meant to sit in its place. Typically that is a diorama with a repair or maintenance, a vehicle laid up in a field workshop or a scene with a crew at stripped-down running gear. The idler wheel of the Panther keeps the track in line and the track is tensioned through its pin mounting, so taking it off was an ordinary task in maintenance and it looks convincing in a diorama. The part can be used for the same purpose as a detail on its own on the bed of a truck or as a small object on a workshop floor.
Separate the parts carefully from their gates with a sharp knife or a fine saw, sand the cuts and degrease the surface before painting. They glue reliably with cyanoacrylate glue, and on larger parts a brief dry-fitted trial helps. The base deserves a primer, and only then apply the base shade. The weathering is done as on the rest of the running gear, that is a dark wash in the recesses and pigments for dust and mud in the places dirt really reaches. With a disassembled part it pays to paint the individual pieces separately before the scene is put together, because once they are seated a brush can no longer reach them.
