The set 1:48 Yakovlev Yak-9D EXPERT kabuki masks is a modeling accessory, not a kit. It consists of precisely cut masking parts of kabuki material, that is of the thin Japanese tape that modelers use to bound the areas that are meant to stay free of paint while spraying. New Ware supplies its sets in three levels of extent marked BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT; the EXPERT level is the most comprehensive of the three.
The Yakovlev Yak-9 was the most numerous Soviet fighter of the Second World War and it grew out of the light mixed construction of the Yak-1 and Yak-7 series. The Yak-9D version was a long-range conversion with an increased fuel supply in the wing, which markedly extended the range of the aircraft and made escort and patrol duties over a wider area possible. Machines of this version served from 1943 to the end of the war on most sectors of the Eastern Front and with allied units equipped with Soviet machines.
The set suits anyone building the Yak-9D in 1:48 scale who wants the frames of the canopy glazing bounded cleanly and without the long work of cutting tape. It is worth it for less experienced modelers too, because the glazing of the canopy tends to be the place where inaccuracy shows first on a finished model.
