The Vought F4U Corsair is an American carrier fighter of the Second World War with a characteristic cranked wing in the shape of an inverted gull. The F4U-2 version came about by conversion into a night fighter: it carried a radar in a pod on the right wing and was meant for interceptions in darkness, when the pilot had to rely on instruments and on ground control.
It is a set of photo-etched parts in 1:48 scale. The elements are etched out of thin metal sheet, they hold onto it only by tiny bridges and they replace details that can be rendered only in simplified form in injection-molded plastic. They are usually used on surfaces where the plastic is thicker than the subject would call for. The exact scope and the list of parts are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Photo-etched parts are bonded with super glue; cement for polystyrene does not hold on metal. Cut the bridges through with a sharp blade on a hard surface and sand the mark they leave down. Make the bends over a straight metal edge or in a bending tool and press evenly along the whole length, so that the part does not ripple. Carry small elements with tweezers and dose the glue with a pin, as a drop from the tube is too big for them. Wash, degrease and prime bare metal surfaces before painting, otherwise the coat rubs off easily.
