HGW 1:32: a masking set for the P-61 Black Widow model: masks cut to shape for the glazing of the large American night fighter.
Responsibility details are not available.
A masking set from HGW in 1:32 scale for a model of the American Northrop P-61 Black Widow night fighter. It is not a kit and not a spare part: these are masks cut to shape which are stuck onto the clear parts of the model so that after spraying the glazing stays transparent and the frames get a sharp edge. On an aircraft as large as this twin-boom machine in 1:32 scale, this is work that cutting tape by hand would stretch out over whole hours.
The Northrop P-61 Black Widow was the first American aircraft designed from the very start as a night fighter with a radar of its own, rather than as a conversion of a daylight type. The design has two booms running back into the tail surfaces and a central nacelle with the crew between them; power came from a pair of R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines. The radar was housed in the nose of the nacelle under a non-metallic cone, the gun armament pointed forward out of the belly and a remotely controlled turret sat above the nacelle. The aircraft was unusually large and heavy for a fighter, but thanks to the power of its engines and its large wing it kept respectable agility. The cockpit glazing and the rear observer's station make up large areas in 1:32 which have to be unmasked cleanly.
Degrease the clear part and let it dry completely; keep your fingers off the visible face, because a print will show through the paint. Lift the mask off the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it down and press it from the center toward the edges so that no bubble is left underneath. Run a toothpick along the edge: how tightly the edge beds down decides how sharp the transition will be. Spray thinly and in several coats; a heavy coat likes to tear away beyond the mask when it is peeled off. It works well to lay down the inner shade of the frames first and only then the outer covering color. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, not once the finish has cured completely.
