An accessory for a model of the fighter aircraft Albatros D.I in 1:32 scale from the manufacturer Quinta Studio. The contents are a 3D printed and pre-painted interior printed on decal paper, which is carried onto the model by the wet route as a decal. It is not a kit of the aircraft nor parts to be glued. On aircraft of the period of the First World War this type of set is especially useful, because the cockpit is only weakly protected and once the build is done one can see into it from above across practically its whole area.
The Albatros D.I was a German single-seat biplane with a wooden monocoque structure of the fuselage, formed by plywood covering on a load-bearing frame. Exactly from that follows the characteristic look of the interior, where wood, leather upholstery and simple instrument equipment come into view.
The grain of wood and the texture of leather belong among the most demanding tasks of hand painting. Wood is commonly done by layering a base, oil graining and clear, that is a procedure spread over several days, and on the first attempts the result tends to be uneven. Color printing gets around this problem, because it brings the texture and the shade ready-made. Care has to be taken with curved areas: the wooden fuselage has rounded sides, onto which the element must not be stretched by force. The base is leveled with fine abrasive paper, sprayed with the base color and gone over with gloss clear. After a brief soak in lukewarm water the element slides into place and a soft brush presses the water out from beneath it with a stroke from the center toward the edges. At the edges it helps to work in small steps with a damp brush, because decal chemistry is not used on printed resin. Everything is finished before the fuselage is closed up, ideally before the upper wing is fitted as well.
