Markings for the aircraft PA474 in the form it wears on its left side: the codes AR-L and the name Leader referring to No. 460 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force from the airfield of Binbrook. A sheet for 1:32 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
PA474 is one of the few Lancasters kept in airworthy condition. It does not fly as an ordinary veteran but as a living reminder of the bomber offensive, and its finish therefore changes from time to time: it gradually takes on the markings of different machines and different crews. This sheet captures one such stage.
An essential property of the subject is asymmetry. The left side carries the codes AR and the individual letter L together with the name Leader, while the opposite side of the airframe was painted after an entirely different machine. The code pair AR belonged to No. 460 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force, which operated from the airfield of Binbrook in Lincolnshire. The sheet concentrates on exactly this side, so during a build it has to be reckoned that the other side of the model will need different source material.
Because this is the finish of a present day aircraft, the details can be verified against photographs from air shows, not only from images of the period. It pays to make use of that and to compare the position of the lettering before a decal settles. A wet film can be moved until it dries, and no longer after that.
