The nickname Pistol Packin Mama was carried by the Lancaster with serial number ME326 and the code AR-P of No. 460 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force. A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:32 scale transfers these markings onto a finished model.
Responsibility details are not available.
The subject is a bomber whose fuselage carried the code pair AR and the individual letter P. The code pair AR belonged to No. 460 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force, a unit made up of Australian crews and assigned to British Bomber Command. Squadrons of similar make-up came about under the training agreement within the Commonwealth and flew over occupied Europe in British machines with British equipment.
A name painted under the cockpit was not merely decoration. It expressed the men's relationship to one particular airframe, set it apart from dozens of otherwise identical aircraft on the same field and was often completed with a row of symbols for the missions flown. It is precisely this layer of markings that turns a model into the portrait of one machine, and for that reason it pays to reproduce it faithfully.
The sheet belongs among waterslide decals. A motif is trimmed as close to the artwork as possible, immersed in lukewarm water for a few seconds and, once the film has released, slid onto an area varnished beforehand. The position is adjusted with a brush, the excess water soaked up, and the cured decal is finally sealed with varnish so that the glossy outline disappears under a uniform surface.
