A flagship injection-molded plastic kit in 1:32 scale from the manufacturer HK Models, issued as a limited edition devoted to a particular aircraft, Rose of York. The kit captures the early production version of the B-17G, that is a machine with the chin turret, but still with the rear of the tail gun position in the style of the B-17F. The edition also contains a resin figure of Princess Elizabeth, who is tied to the history of this aircraft. The finished model is huge: a span of approximately 99 cm and a length of around 71 cm. Reckon with a matching amount of room in the display case and on the workbench.
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was an American four-engined heavy bomber, deployed above all in daylight raids over Europe. The G version is the most widespread one and you will recognize it by the chin turret under the nose. The particular machine Rose of York served with the 306th Bomb Group (367th Bomb Squadron) and in July 1944, during a visit by the British royal family to the base, it was christened by the then eighteen-year-old Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II. On February 3, 1945 the aircraft did not return from its sixty-third combat mission: on the way back from a raid on Berlin it disappeared over the North Sea. No one from among the people on board, the war correspondent included, was found. The machine was never traced.
Finish and paint the interior of the fuselage, the cockpit and the gun positions before you close the fuselage halves up, as there is no reaching them once they have been glued together. Build the engine nacelles and the landing gear as separate subassemblies. On the large areas use a primer, otherwise scratches are harder to spot on them and the paint holds worse. The characteristic glossy natural metal is best done with lacquer metallic paints over a smooth, perfectly polished base: apply them right at the end, because they are hard to mask and to overspray. Mask the glazing of the cockpit and the turrets carefully; on a model of this size it pays to invest the time in sanding the seams on the wings and the fuselage.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
