The real subject

A bombing formation formed up over England before it set out for the target, and for that it needed a machine recognizable from a distance. This task was performed by worn-out bombers repainted into garish patterns that bore no comparison with combat camouflage. They flew without bombs, with only the crew needed to circle, and as soon as the formation was in order they returned to the ground. This machine is a B-24D Liberator with the marking The Little Gramper, that is, a four-engine bomber with a pair of vertical tail surfaces and a slender wing set high on the fuselage.

What the set contains

The set contains stencils for spraying the pattern of the finish and stencils of the national insignia, cut for a B-24D model in 1:32 scale. In a large scale every deviation in the width of a stripe and every unmatched transition from the fuselage onto the wing is apparent on such a finish, which is why prepared stencils pay off more than on small models. The layout of the elements and the recommended order of steps is given in the enclosed instructions.

Building and painting tips

The pattern carries over across the whole airframe, so before spraying assemble the model far enough for the parts to sit in their final position; otherwise the transition of the stripes across the seam will not line up. Around protruding elements such as the gun turrets and the entrances, press the stencil down with your finger around the whole perimeter. Spray the paint in several light layers. Take the stencil off once the paint has flashed off, not after it has cured.
