About product

1:32 Lightning F.3 decals, XR716 in green and gray camouflage (Xtradecal)

A decal sheet in 1:32 scale for the British Lightning F.3 interceptor in the particular form of machine XR716 of No. 5 Squadron, based at Binbrook, in 1982, in green and gray camouflage. The product is a standalone accessory for a model, not a kit. The manufacturer is the British firm Xtradecal.

The real subject

The Lightning was a supersonic interceptor of British design, recognizable at first glance by the unusual arrangement of two engines one above the other and by a sharply swept wing. It came out of the joint development of English Electric and the British Aircraft Corporation, hence the dual manufacturer designation. The F.3 version was among the later forms of the line. Machines of the later years served in a camouflage finish that replaced the earlier natural metal surface, so the markings on them look less contrasting than on the older aircraft.

Application tips

The base is what decides. Never apply decals directly onto a camouflage finish, which is by its nature semi-matte to matte, because the microscopic roughness of the surface will trap air under the film and a silvered veil will form that can no longer be removed. Before the decals, therefore, go over the whole model with a thin gloss clear coat and let it cure for at least a day, not a few hours. Lay the clear coat on with an airbrush in one continuous coat, not in several passes over one another. Only onto a surface sealed and smoothed in this way should the decals be settled; let them dry overnight and finally unify with a matte varnish to suit the character of the subject.

Who the sheet is for

  • builders of large-scale models of British jet aircraft
  • modelers who want a particular machine with documented markings
  • anyone interested in the later camouflaged form of the type
  • those looking for an alternative to the markings in the box

The package contains the decal sheet only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They refer to the makers of the aircraft, the firms English Electric and the British Aircraft Corporation, which took part in its development and production.

Yes. Lay a gloss clear coat over the matte camouflage finish, otherwise a silvered veil will form under the decal.

No, it is solely a decal sheet.

Rather a whole day. A clear coat that is insufficiently cured lifts under the water from the decal.
