A self-adhesive masking set for spraying the German crosses and the supplementary markings on a large model of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-10. The shapes are pre-cut to the outlines of the kit from Revell.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-10 appeared in the autumn of 1944 as an attempt to unify fragmented production into a single standard. Under the cowling worked a Daimler-Benz DB 605 D engine with MW 50 water-methanol boost, which gave the machine around 690 km/h at its optimum altitude. The recognition features of the version are the bulged fairings over the gun armament, a sliding cockpit canopy without a transverse stiffener and a taller rudder. Final assembly ran at the Erla, Wiener Neustaedter Flugzeugwerke and Diana firms, each of which added its own small deviations in the details of the airframe. Collectors and builders therefore face the most questions of the kind who built which example with this version.
The sheets contain pre-cut self-adhesive shapes for spraying the national insignia and numbers on a large-scale model of this version. The cut outlines respect the panel structure, so the edges do not overlap with rows of rivets and they line up with the shape of the fuselage sides. A sprayed marking has one fundamental advantage over a decal: it lacks the carrier film that betrays itself on matte paint with a sheen. The cross then behaves as part of the surface finish, not as a film laid on top.
The well-tried sequence of steps looks like this. First apply the light shade of the border, let it cure properly and only then stick on the masking shape for the dark center. Lay the thinned paint down in several light passes perpendicular to the edge of the mask, so that it does not get under it. Peel it off rather before the paint has fully hardened; the edge then stays sharper and there is no risk of a piece of the finish lifting with the film.
