Masking set for the Messerschmitt Bf 109E in the E-1 and E-4 versions, 1:32 scale. It masks the frame from both faces and adds a pair of insignia masks and decals.

The name of the item joins two forms of the Emil between which lies more than just a change of armament. The E-1 carried four machine guns and a lighter airframe; the E-4 received 20 mm cannon in the wings, heavier armor and a reworked canopy. Makers of masking sets therefore join the two designations where one and the same kit, offering the build of both machines from one box, is aimed at them.
Before you reach for the first film, compare the cut with the clear part that your kit has for the version you have chosen. The canopies of the two forms differ in the run of their frames and it pays to confirm which of them the set assumes. The films in the box are prepared for both faces of the clear part, so after spraying the bars of the frame look rendered from both viewpoints.
The box offers both routes to marking the machine at once. Two national insignia stencils serve for applying the cross in paint straight into the finish, and a decal sheet then covers the rest. A sprayed insignia has no edge and will take later dusting with no risk of the film lifting, whereas a decal is finished faster and does not call for covering the surrounding areas. Combining the two on one model is common practice.
Unused films last for years provided they stay on their original backing and out of direct sunlight. Heat softens the adhesive layer and the sheet then separates from the backing with torn corners, which on small pieces means a cut that cannot be used.
