With the F version German fighter camouflage changed fundamentally. The preceding machines carried a pair of dark green tones on the upper surfaces arranged into angular fields with hard edges, a pattern inherited from a time when a view from above onto the Central European countryside was what was expected. Over the Channel and later over the eastern plains, though, the fighting took place higher and above a lighter background, and a dark airframe became a target against them.
An arrangement of two gray tones above and a light gray-blue underside replaced it, with the boundary rising high up the sides of the fuselage. And it was on that side that the feature arose by which the machines of the period are recognized at first glance: irregular soft-edged mottles sprayed on by hand at the unit. It was not a whim. A softened transition breaks up the outline of the fuselage when seen from the side, that is from the position from which a fighter attacks, whereas a hard edge would draw the eye instead.
The frame of the low canopy with its side door is difficult for a brush, so the stencils are cut for both faces of the glazing. Two national insignia masks let the cross be sprayed and the decals complete the remaining markings.
Spray the mottles on the sides at low pressure and from a short distance, otherwise the edge is blown out into vagueness.
