Pre-cut painting masks for a model of the Curtiss Hawk 81-A2 fighter in 1:32 scale from the Czech maker Eduard. This is the basic masking set, that is the version for masking the glazing from the outside; the version marked TFace, which also holds masks for the inner face of the glass, comes out separately under its own name. It is not a model kit but an accessory for painting.
The masks are cut from kabuki paper, a thin masking paper with a slightly yielding adhesive. The parts are peeled off the sheet, laid on the glass and pressed down with a stick or a toothpick. The paper follows curves, comes off after spraying without any adhesive residue and does no harm to the clear part. Against cutting tape by hand it saves hours of work and the frames come out even, which shows plainly on the large glazed areas of a 1:32 model.
Wash the glazing before masking and let it dry, as grease from your fingers lifts the masks. Press the mask down in the corners of the frame too, otherwise the paint runs under it. Spray in thin coats; lay down the interior shade or a primer under the mask first, so that any bleed does not show. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, pulling along the surface rather than straight up. Touch up small flaws with a fine brush before gluing the glass into the fuselage.
The set holds painting masks only; it is not a model kit. Paints are not included in the package.
