About product

Eduard 1:32 Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk - mask set

A mask set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for the large 1:32 scale. It contains self-adhesive masks die-cut to the shape of the canopy frames and of the other glazing of the P-40E. This is the basic, single-sided version of the mask: the outer side of the clear parts is masked. Anyone who wants the framing colored from inside as well reaches for the TFace version of the same set. The set is neither a kit nor a model - it is an accessory used when painting a plastic model.

How it differs from the other accessories for this aircraft

A mask adds no physical detail to the model. That sets it apart from the photo-etched sets by the same manufacturer, which put new brass parts into the interior, onto the outer surface, into the gun bays or onto the landing flaps, and also from the resin accessories. A mask deals purely with clean painting of the glazing, so it does not rule the other accessories out; it complements them.

The real subject

The Curtiss P-40E is a single-engine fighter with a liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 engine and a distinctive radiator slung under the nose. In Commonwealth service it carried the name Kittyhawk. The E version differs from the earlier P-40s in its shorter nose, its revised cockpit and its armament concentrated in the wing. The large 1:32 scale emphasizes those differences, so the glazing is worth some care.

Usage tips

Wash the glazing first and let it dry thoroughly - grease from your fingers is the most common reason a mask lifts. Move the parts with tweezers, press them down all round with a toothpick and apply the paint in several thin coats. In 1:32 scale the frames are wide, so any bleed under the mask is very visible. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, pulling at a shallow angle.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of large scales who want straight frames without cutting tape by hand
  • Anyone interested in American fighters of the Second World War
  • Modelers working with an airbrush
  • Anyone who does not fancy masking a multi-part canopy strip by strip

This is an accessory for a kit, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. This is a set of masks for the glazing, that is an accessory for the plastic P-40E model in 1:32 scale. The kit is sold separately.

This set masks only the outer side of the clear parts. The TFace version adds shapes for the inner side as well, so the frames can be colored from inside with the interior paint. It therefore covers more of the job.

It does not, it solves something else. A mask helps with painting the glazing, while photo-etch and resin add new parts to the model. Feel free to use them together.

Most often because of a greasy surface or too thick a coat of paint. Degrease the glazing, press the edge of the mask down and spray several thin coats instead of one heavy one.
