A figure of a Czechoslovak fighter pilot of the pre-war period, prepared for models of the Avia B.534 biplane fighter in 1:32 scale. A figure beside the aircraft gives the viewer an immediate sense of scale and turns a lone model into a small scene. It is also one of the few ways to add a period-correct figure to a Czech subject in this particular scale.
The Avia B.534 was a Czechoslovak biplane fighter of the first half of the 1930s with an Avia Hispano-Suiza 12Ydrs V12 engine and four machine guns. At the time it was built it ranked among the best-performing biplane fighters in the world, and in 1938 it formed the backbone of Czechoslovak fighter aviation. The pre-war period the figure refers to means service with the home air regiments, when the machines carried distinctive colored unit markings.
Before painting, wash the figure in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let it dry completely - the paint then holds considerably better. A thin primer follows, which takes acrylics well. The face and hands can be managed with glazes and gradual lightening of the raised areas, while the flying clothing takes a darker base and a light dry brush. Paint the eyes last, with the finest brush you have.
