About product

The F-35A Lightning II masking set in 1:32 scale

This item is not an airplane model but a set of pre-cut painting masks from the manufacturer Eduard. The masks are stuck straight onto the clear part of the model and define the areas that are to stay transparent, while the frame and the surroundings of the glazing are sprayed with paint. That does away with cutting strips from masking tape by hand and with measuring out exactly where the edge should lie. With a one-piece canopy of the kind the F-35 has, the advantage is all the greater: the transition between the clear surface and the frame is long and curved, so it is difficult to mask by hand.

The real subject

The Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II is a single-seat, single-engine combat aircraft. The letter A denotes the version with conventional takeoff and landing from a runway, unlike the other variants of the family meant for short takeoff and vertical landing or for carrier operations. The shaping of the airframe and of the canopy is subordinated to reducing the radar signature, which shows on the model among other things in smooth transitions with no sharp edges.

How to use the masks

First wash the clear part and let it dry perfectly; a mask will not hold on a greasy surface. Lift the mask off the sheet with tweezers or a wooden stick, seat it in place and press the edges down with a toothpick, so that no paint gets under the edge. Spray in thin coats over several passes. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried; after a longer time the edge goes brittle and there is a risk of tearing a piece of the coat away. On the curved surface of the canopy it helps to warm the mask lightly once it is in place, as it then conforms to the shape better.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the F-35A in the large 1:32 scale
  • Those who do not want to mask a long curved frame by hand from tape
  • Builders who care about a sharp edge between the frame and the clear surface
  • Beginners for whom masking a cockpit is the biggest obstacle

The masks are an accessory to a plastic kit. The model itself and the paints are not part of the package.

FAQ

It is not. This is a set of painting masks for a plastic F-35A kit in 1:32 scale, which you have to obtain separately.

The letter A denotes the variant with conventional takeoff and landing from a runway. The other versions of the family are meant for short takeoff and vertical landing or for operating from ships.

Shortly after the paint has dried. After a longer time the edge of the paint goes brittle and a piece of the coat may be torn away when peeling.

Press the edges down carefully with a toothpick and spray thin coats over several passes. One heavy coat gets under the edge far more easily.
