This set of pre-colored 3D printed decals on decal paper from Quinta Studio is aimed at the cockpit of a model of the F-35 Lightning II in the A and C variants, 1:32 scale. The elements have raised relief and a finished color rendering, so they replace painting the small details of the cockpit by hand.

The real subject

The F-35A is the single-seat land-based variant of the fifth-generation fighter; the F-35C is the single-seat carrier variant with a larger wing area and an arrestor hook for operating from aircraft carriers. Both are single-seat and their cockpits are close to each other: a large touch screen dominates them instead of the classic array of dials. That is why this set is listed for both variants at once; if you are building the A variant only, the brand also has a separate item for it alone.

How the decals are applied

Cut the elements out as close to the edge as possible, soak them for about fifteen seconds in lukewarm water and slide them off the backing paper onto a smooth, degreased and glossy surface. They have no adhesive layer of their own; gloss varnish (Future, Klear, Tamiya X-22) holds them, and on uneven areas a drop of super glue helps; a flat surface is a mistake. Do not use a decal softener on this line: its chemistry will attack the printed resin and destroy the element. Once thoroughly dry, close the cockpit. Flat varnish at the end evens out the surface, while the faces of the displays are best left glossy.
