Before the war US naval aviation had a well worked-out system in which color gave away the affiliation of a machine without a single letter. The upper surface of the wing was given a deep yellow finish so that the aircraft would be clearly visible on the water in an accident. The color of the tail surfaces indicated the parent ship and further shades distinguished the squadron and the position in a flight, so the leader of a trio had a differently colored cowling from his wingmen. The whole system fell during 1941, when the colorful finishes were replaced by an inconspicuous blue-gray and the marking remained the only colored element of the airframe. A modeler therefore chooses between two very different forms of the same machine.
The Buffalo was the first monoplane with an all-metal structure introduced on American carriers. Its squat fuselage with short wings earned it its nickname and the machine itself gradually accumulated equipment until the added weight took its performance away. While it failed against newer machines in the Pacific, one Nordic user achieved remarkable results with it.
Yellow covers very badly and asserts itself over a dark base only with difficulty. It is applied over a white base; otherwise it needs many coats and they clog the edges of the mask.
