Masking set for the Vought F4U-1A Corsair carrier fighter in 1:32 scale. It masks the cockpit canopy from the outside and the inside and adds four sets of national insignia masks and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F4U-1A version came about as an answer to the trouble with landing on a deck. The pilot's seat moved a good deal higher, the fuselage decking ahead of the cockpit took on a different shape and, above all, the divided framed cover nicknamed the birdcage disappeared. The new canopy had an incomparably better view forward and to the sides, and only with it did the Corsair begin to serve from carrier decks and not just from island bases.
The cockpit does have fewer frames than on the early version, but it is set high and seen from the side you look through the glass straight into the cockpit. An unfinished frame from inside is therefore visible from every angle. The set handles both faces at once, so the framing looks equally good from outside and from the view into the cockpit.
Four sets of insignia are no needless luxury. The American markings changed several times during the war, the star gained side bars and then a blue surround, and anyone building a particular machine of a particular squadron needs something to choose from. A sprayed insignia also makes no step on the skin, so once matted down it merges with the surrounding color entirely. Working with the film is faster than it seems: the greater part of the evening goes on waiting for the paint to dry, not on the application itself.
