About product

A three-dimensional interior decal, 1:32 F/A-18A++ (Quinta Studio)

This item is an accessory set, not a kit of the aircraft. Quinta Studio prints the interior elements three-dimensionally and already in color onto decal paper, so the instrument panel, the cockpit side consoles, the control panels and the seat belts all gain relief and legible lettering at once. In 1:32 scale the cockpit of the Hornet is large and a detailed interior is among the most prominent features of the finished model. The decals are shaped for the parts of the Academy kit.

The real subject

The F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine carrier-borne multirole aircraft in both the fighter and the attack role. The A++ designation belongs to the upgraded form of the original single-seat A version: the machines went through an avionics update that was reflected in the equipment of the cockpit, so their cockpit differs from that of the early machines. Anyone building a particular aircraft should therefore reach for the interior set matching this very form; otherwise the difference will show on the model as an inconsistent instrument panel.

Application tips

Quinta three-dimensional decals are released from the backing paper in water: the part is soaked in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slid off the paper into place. A softener or a setting solution, however, is not used on them at all, as they would damage the printed resin layer. They are seated on a painted, degreased interior surface gone over with gloss varnish, on which they hold. So spray the cockpit first and let the paint dry thoroughly. The exact procedure and the recommended order of the elements are given in the instructions included with the set. Use smooth-jawed tweezers, lay the part down first and fine-tune its position, and only then press it home. The displays can be brought to life with a drop of clear gloss varnish, and a matte varnish will unify the whole interior at the end.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of upgraded Hornets in the large 1:32 scale
  • Modelers who want a faithful cockpit without painting the individual instruments
  • Those building the model with the canopy open
  • An alternative to photo-etched interior sets

This is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory set. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory set of three-dimensional interior decals; the Hornet kit in 1:32 scale has to be obtained separately.

The set is worked out for the form designated A++, whose cockpit differs from that of the early machines. For the basic version Quinta makes a separate set, which matches it better.

No, and it must not be used, as it would damage the printed resin layer. The part is merely soaked in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slid off the backing paper onto a painted, degreased surface gone over with gloss varnish; the exact procedure is given in the instructions in the package.

It is intended for the Academy kit.
