Stencils for spraying the spiral on the propeller spinner of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in the A, F and G versions, 1:32 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The light spiral on the propeller spinner was one of the most conspicuous recognition features of German fighters. With the engine running it blurred into a flickering disc visible from a long way off and showed the ground crew that the propeller blades were turning. The particular pattern differed from machine to machine, from a thin line to a broad helix running right up to the tip.
The Focke-Wulf 190 in the A version was used as a fighter, the letter F marked the ground-attack variant for supporting troops and G the long-range fighter-bomber with large drop tanks. The front cover of the propeller hub above the BMW 801 radial engine stayed the same on all three, so a single cut covers the whole trio.
The base shade of the whole spinner comes first. Once it has cured, the cut film is stuck down and the second color is applied in several thin coats, so that it does not run under the edge. This method has two advantages over a decal: no glossy carrier film stays on the spinner, and no wrinkles form where the surface narrows sharply toward the tip. The package contains self-adhesive stencils only; the aircraft model is bought separately.
It comes into its own wherever the builder is working from a particular photograph and wants the pattern exactly as on the real machine. It serves just as well when the decal from an older box has yellowed or has fallen apart in the water. The film also lets you swap the light and dark shades and spray the pattern the other way round, which a printed sheet cannot do.
